849 Naval Air Squadron

LEST WE FORGET

Service of Remembrance for 849 "A" Flight.

   HMSINVINCIBLE- 21 March 2004

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide:

     the darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide:

   when other helpers fail, and comforts flee,

help of the helpless, O abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;

earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away;

change and decay in all around I see;

O thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need thy presence every passing hour;

what but thy grace can foil the tempter's power?

Who like thyself my guide and stay can be?

Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with thee at hand to bless;

ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.

Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?

I triumph still, if thou abide with me.

Hold thou thy cross before my closing eyes;

shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies:

heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;

in life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Grace and peace be with you all. And also with you.

As we gather together on this first anniversary, let us pray that we may be united in our prayers as we remember all those who died in the Arabian Gulf and in particular today we remember our brothers from 849 and their family and friends

God our refuge and strength,

close at hand in our distress;

meet us in our sorrow and lift our eyes

to the peace and light of your constant care.

Help us so to hear your word of grace

that our fear will be dispelled by your love,

our loneliness eased by your presence

and our hope renewed by your promises

in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

As we gather together we remember that we are on this earth but for a short time and at the end we shall all be called to account before God for our lives. He is the Lord who forgives all who turn to him, so let us call to mind our sins.

Remember, Lord, your compassion and love, for they are everlasting. Lord, have mercy.

All Lord, have mercy.

 Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions,

but think on me in your goodness, O Lord, according to your steadfast love.

Christ, have merry.

All Christ, have mercy.

 O keep my soul and deliver me;

Let me not be put to shame, for I have put my trust in you.

Lord, have mercy.

All Lord, have mercy.

 May God our Father forgive us our sins and bring us to the fellowship of his table with his saints for ever.

All Amen.

 The Collect

Merciful Father, hear our prayers and comfort us; renew our trust in your Son, whom you raised from the dead; strengthen our faith that those who died from 849 last year will share in his resurrection; who lives and reigns with you, now and for ever. Amen.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

who has blessed us all with the gift of this earthly life

and has given to our brothers from 849

their span of years and gifts of character.

God our Father, we thank you now for all their lives,

for every memory of love and joy, for every good deed done by them,

For their service to their country in pursuit of peace and security.

We thank you for their lives, we thank you for the rest in Christ they now enjoy, we thank you for giving them to us,

we thank you for the glory we shall share together.

Hear our prayers through Jesus Christ our Lord.. Amen.

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us

All  Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come; thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil

For thine is the kingdom,

the power and the glory,

for ever and ever. Amen,

O Ruler of the earth and sky,

be with our aircrew when they fly

and keep them in thy loving care

from all the dangers of the air.

O hear us when we cry to thee

for those who fly o'er land and sea

O Trinity of love and power,

our brethren shield in danger's hour;

from rock and tempest, fire and foe,

protect them whereso'er they go:

and ever let there rise to thee

glad hymns of praise from land and sea

All Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with the saints:

where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

You only are immortal, the creator and maker of all:

and we are mortal, formed from the dust of the earth,

and unto earth shall we return. For so you ordained when you created me, saying:

`Dust you are and to dust you shall return.' All of us go down to the dust,

yet weeping at the grave, we make our song.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

All Give rest, O Christ, to your servant with the saints:

where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting.

May Christ the good shepherd enfold you with love, fill you with peace,

and lead you in hope, to the end of your days; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.

The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended,

the darkness falls at thy behest;

to thee our morning hymns ascended,

thy praise shall sanctify our rest.

As o'er each continent and island

the dawn leads on another day,

the voice of prayer is never silent,

nor dies the strain of praise away.

We thank thee that thy Church unsleeping,

while earth rolls onward into light,

through all the world her watch is keeping,

and rests not now by day or night.

So be it, Lord; thy throne shall never,

like earth's proud empires, pass away;

thy kingdom stands, and grows for ever,

till all thy creatures own thy sway
